  1. Conflict Resolution Miss Jones ~ Spring 2014

  2. Movie Break • Talladega Nights • Story of Ricky Bobby the NASCAR racer. Currently in the movie, Ricky has lost his mojo. Cal is his best friend and they are known for their Shake N Bake style. • 51:36

  3. Objectives • Define conflict • Classify the strategies to get past paradigms • Simulate the seven strategies for resolving a conflict

  4. Define Conflict Objective 1

  5. What is Conflict? • Opposition, a clash of opposing ideas, disagreement, fight or battle, contention, hostility • Have you ever dealt with conflict in Ag Ed or the FFA?

  6. Causes of Conflict • Opposing viewpoints or opinions • Emotions • Selfishness • Miscommunication • Misunderstandings • Assumptions

  7. Classify the strategies to get past paradigms Objective 2

  8. What is a paradigm? • A theory • An explanation • A model of something

  9. Wrong or Right Map? • Suppose you wanted to arrive at specific location in central Chicago. A street map of the city would be a great help to you in reaching your destination. • But suppose you were given the wrong map. Though a printing error, the map labeled “Chicago” was actually a map of Detroit. • Can you imagine the frustration, the ineffectiveness of trying to reach your destination?

  10. Wrong or Right Map? • You might work on your behavior—you could try harder, being more diligent, doubling your speed. But your efforts would only succeed in getting you to the wrong place faster. • You might work on your attitude—you could think more positively. You still wouldn’t get to the right place, but perhaps you wouldn’t care. Your attitude would be so positive, you’d be happy wherever you were. • The point is, you’d still be lost. The fundamental problem has nothing to do with your behavior or your attitude. It has everything to do with the wrong map.

  11. Wrong or Right Map? • Each of us has many, many maps in our head, which can be divided into two main categories: maps of the way things are, or realities, and maps of the way things should be, or values. • We interpret everything we experience through these mental maps. We seldom question their accuracy; we’re usually even unaware that we have them. • We simply assume that the way we see things is the way they really are or the way they should be.

  12. What Do you see? 3 1 1 2 4

  13. Strategies to get past paradigms (perceptions) • Avoid Assumptions • Validation • Listen • Problem Solving Skills • Tell Your Story

  14. Movie Break • Talladega Nights • Ricky Bobby has hit a rough patch in his career. Worn out from his latest problems, he returns to his house and family. • 1:31:45

  15. Simulate the seven Strategies for resolving a conflict Objective 3

  16. Strategies to Resolve Conflict • Assume you do not have all the answers. • Ask questions to understand the other person(s). • Be prepared to compromise or make a deal. • Postpone. If tired, sick, hungry wait until you feel better. • Enforce. If there are consequences to the behavior you should follow through with them. • Compromise. Be willing to give a little. • Explore. Be willing to find other solutions that have not yet been discussed.

  17. Working Together: Use what you learned • Mission: To memorize the correct places of 15 pieces of paper and then be able to turn them over in numerical order. • Time Frame: 2 minutes • Teams: Each team will have 4 • Can only turn them over one at a time and must put the piece of paper back in the same place. • You may turn over each piece of paper as many times as you’d like.

  18. Discussion – What q’s • How many numbers did you get correct? • What strategy did your team use to meet the challenge? • How successful did your strategy prove to be? • What would you do differently if you were to try this activity again?

  19. Discussion – so what Q’s • Did everyone on your team contribute? Why or why not? • What happens in a group when someone does not contribute? • How can you be sure that everyone on the team has a voice in helping find a solution? • How did your team decide on a strategy to use? • What is meant by the phrase “Two heads are better than one”? • What happens when conflict arises when making a team decision? • What should you do if your team fails to solve the problem the first time they try it? • What roles does communication play when trying to solve a problem?

  20. Discussion – Now way q’s • What are the benefits of having more than one person working on a problem? • How can you avoid conflict when making a group decision? • What steps can be taken to give everyone a chance to be heard in the group?

  21. Objectives • Define conflict • Classify the strategies to get past paradigms • Simulate the seven strategies for resolving a conflict

  22. Movie Break • Talladega Nights • Indy 500 race. Ricky Bobby and Jean have jumped out of their racecars and ran across the finish line. Cal finished 3rd in his racecar. • Be aware of the PG-13 language • 1:47:07

  23. Postcard • Write a postcard to your parents explaining the day’s lesson • You may decorate one side like a postcard if you have time • Make sure to sign your name and turn it in before you leave!
