  1. Plants -Multicellular Eukaryotes that photosynthesize. -Cell walls made of cellulose

  2. Types of plants—Non vascular 1. Bryophytes—Mosses, liverworts, hornworts. --Reproduction only in water --No vascular tissue --draw water only by osmosis Vascular tissue

  3. 2. Seedless Vascular plants—ferns and their relatives --Reproduce using spores --Have vascular tissue to transport food and water --Phloem-moves food through the plant --Xylem-moves water through the plant Xylem and phloem spores

  4. Microscope break… • At this point, you will use the microscopes to look at a cross section of a fern leaf, which includes the sorus, which is the spore producing part of a fern leaf. • You will then look at a fern gametophyte (prothallium). • Sketch each on low power and we will label when done.

  5. Vascular plants 3. Gymnosperms– conifers, cykads, ginkgoes, gnetophytes --reproduce by seeds—have no protective coat (naked seed). . --sperm from pollen fertilizes egg --includes pine, spruce, fir trees

  6. Gymnosperms continued! Pinecones (female) contain the seeds. ---- Male cones contain the pollen---- Where are the different types of cones located on the tree?

  7. 4. Angiosperms—Flowering plants --Have flowers which attract insects and birds for more efficient pollination. --have ovary—covers seed (fruit) --animals may carry fruit to new locations—other dispersal mechanisms?

  8. Diversity of Angiosperms Two classes: Monocotyledonae (monocots) Dicotyledonae (dicots) Comparison of monocots and dicots. Monocots—corn, lilly, grass, orchids, palms, etc. Dicots—roses, clover, tomatoes, daisies, etc. (Pg. 570)
