  1. Warm-Up • Update your Table of Contents for Monday and today – write a reminder about the Evolution Test…study everything you have! • Get your Evidence of Evolution packet out to be checked • Get a whiteboard, marker, eraser

  2. Fact or Crap? • If you believe that the information given on the slide is truthful & accurate simply write FACT on your whiteboard • If you believe that the information given on the slide is NOT accurate information write CRAP on your whiteboard, AND THEN WRITE A CORRECT STATEMENT!

  3. Fact or Crap? • The 4 Principles of Natural Selection are: • Variation • Mutation • Selection • Overproduction

  4. Fact or Crap? • Evolution can be geological or biological

  5. Fact or Crap? • A cheetah preying on the weakest member of the antelope herd is an example of Darwin’s idea of Survival of the Fittest

  6. Fact or Crap? • A good example of evolution would be the leaves on the trees changing every season

  7. Fact or Crap? • Most living things leave a fossil behind

  8. Fact or Crap? • Phenotype means that an organism’s DNA mutates more easily

  9. Fact or Crap? • Vestigial structures are things that may have been useful to an organism’s ancestors, but are no longer used

  10. Fact or Crap? • Similar development of embryos in different species is evidence of a common ancestor

  11. Fact or Crap? • Analogous structures mean that they have the same structure and same function

  12. Fact or Crap? • Biological classification can also be referred to as taxonomy

  13. Homologous, analogous or vestigial? • Homologous: • same structure, different function • evidence of a common ancestor • Analogous: • different structure, similar function • evidence of common environmental demands • Vestigial: • remnants of ancestor, no longer useful

  14. Homologous, analogous or vestigial?

  15. Homologous, analogous or vestigial?

  16. Homologous, analogous or vestigial? • Wisdom Teeth

  17. Homologous, analogous or vestigial?

  18. Homologous, analogous or vestigial? • Remnants of a 3rd eyelid

  19. The Challenge: Homologous, analogous or vestigial? Leaves on a gingko tree • Leaves on an oak tree

  20. Evolutionary trees • That last example was hard to figure out…how would we ever know they have a common ancestor?

  21. Reading Evolutionary trees

  22. Speciation • These speciation events in the evolutionary tree allow for our planet to have greater biodiversity? • What is biodiversity?

  23. Station review • Find out the answer to that question and more! • Visit each of the 5 stations and write the answers to each of the questions on page 9 of your notebook!
