  1. Chapter Summary Section 1: Rebuilding the Nation As the Civil War ended, Americans faced enormous problems. Much of the South had been destroyed, and homeless refugees needed food, shelter, and work. President Lincoln developed a plan for a peaceful Reconstruction, but he was assassinated before his ideas could be put into practice.

  2. Chapter Summary (continued) Section 2: The Battle over Reconstruction President Andrew Johnson disagreed with Congress over the best plan for Reconstruction. Johnson wanted a lenient plan while Congress supported a stricter approach. Congress passed amendments that guaranteed more rights to African Americans, but huge challenges remained.

  3. Chapter Summary (continued) Section 3: The End of Reconstruction The election of 1876 brought about the end of Reconstruction. As a result, African Americans lost many of their newly gained political and civil rights. Many were forced into a cycle of debt as sharecroppers. The economy of the South began a slow recovery.
