  1. Warm Up In a brief paragraph, please explain the differences between goals and wishes.

  2. Learning Goal Today I will learn the three types of goals and practice setting goals of my own by completing a graphic organizer that uses the “GPA” goal setting method.

  3. Three Types of Goals • Short-range Goals • Mid-range Goals • Long-range Goals

  4. Goal Setting and the “GPA” Method • Goal • Set the goal • Plan • General Plan • Action • Determine SPECFIC steps of ACTION

  5. Sample Short-range Goal • GOAL: I will get an “A” on my binder check this week. • PLAN: I will set aside time to make sure my binder is in order and will check it with my Seminar teacher ahead of time to make sure I meet all grading criteria beforehand. • ACTION: • Be sure I have the correct sized binder • Make sure that I have dividers for each of my classes and all are labeled correctly • Make sure I have placed all of my handouts and papers in the proper sections • Make sure all my notes have proper headings • Check my planner/assignment sheet to make sure I have recorded all assignments • Make sure my calendar is up-to-date • Review everything with my teacher the day before the binder check • Review everything the night before the binder check

  6. Sample Mid-range Goal • GOAL: I will have an “A” in my Seminar class • PLAN: I will follow through on all the requirements for my Seminar class. • ACTION: • Make sure that I get an “A” on every binder check by checking my binder the night before. • Keep up with my note taking everyday and my homework every night. • Bring good questions to class and participate fully to earn a “4” on every SDLP grade. • Complete all assignments on time.

  7. Sample Long-range Goal • GOAL: I will have a 3.0 grade average by the end of the semester • PLAN: I will make sure that I don’t get anything lower than a “C” in my most difficult classes, and that I get at least one “A” and a minimum of four “B’s.” • ACTION: • Understand how each of my teachers calculates grades in all my classes • Decide which classes I’m going for an “A,” or “B” • Complete all assignments on time and write down everything in my planner. • Take good notes and stay organized using my Seminar binder. • Get grade checks at least 2-3 weeks before each progress report. • Talk to my teachers if I need help and/or go to tutoring after school. • Make sure I have a “study-buddy” for each of my classes. • Make sure I attend every class, every day

  8. Now you try it! • Use one side of the handout to create a short-range goal. • Use the other side of the handout to create a mid-range or long-range goal.

  9. Exit Reflection You just worked on setting a short-range goal. Please identify the very first action step for this goal that you can begin taking tomorrow!
