  3. Robert Hooke in 1663 Hooke used the term “cells” (small rooms) because he thought they looked like the small rooms that monks lived in. Like jail cells – small rooms on top of each other

  5. Anton van Leeuwenhoek Read page 53 in life book, what did he see? • Lake Water • Scraping from teeth and gums • Water from rain gutters What did he call them? Why? Animalcules – They looked like tiny little animals moving around the slide

  6. What did the microscope have to do with all of this??? What did both scienctists discover?? Cells! If they are both cells, why do they look different?? There are many types of cells!

  12. 16. When does the theory hold true? Just 1 square inch of the human hand is more than 100,000 cells The human body is composed of 10 trillion cells!! • The cell theory holds true no matter how big or small a living thing is.

  13. Draw a timeline in your notes: Include: • Hooke • Leeuwenhoek • Schleiden • Schwann • Virchow Why do you think it took 200 years after cells were discovered for scientists to conclude that all living things are made of cells? • Fewer scientists and microscopes and therefore samples!
