PASS/C3 CCSS • Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text. • RL.8.2 • Determine the main (or major) idea and how those ideas are supported with specific details. • Paraphrase and summarize text to recall, inform, or organize ideas. • 3.3 (8th grade)

  8. Using the Standards • Read the two 8th grade excerpts with the standards in mind. • Consider and discuss: Which standards can you cover with these two short excerpts? • Also, HOW will you teach it? • How will you know if students learned it?

  10. Teaching Ideas: Concept Circles Common Core • How will you know if students learned it? PASS/C3 Pre-AP AP

  11. Teaching Ideas: Standard Questions 1: How do you know? Prove it. Show me. Where’s your evidence? 2: 2Q2T 3: How does X impact Y? 4: Concept circles and other vocab activities

  12. Teaching Ideas: Standard Questions 7: What is the effect of presentation in a different medium? 5: How does structure impact meaning? 6: How does POV impact meaning? 8: Outline the argument. 9:How does this fit into a larger context?

  14. How will you know if they learned it? Read the text with the standards in mind. Write one question or develop one task that will check student understanding of one standard. Repeat for as many other standards as possible.

  15. Refining Your Questions… Is each question/task… connected directly to one standard? written to the appropriate level of complexity?

  16. Bloom’s Taxonomy Check your verbs to make sure your tasks are written to the appropriate level of complexity.
