  4. Where have mummies been found? • They’ve been found throughout the world • Some were naturally mummified • Most were mummified through an embalming process

  5. The most famous mummies • The most famous mummies come from Egypt • The early Egyptian mummies were naturally mummified • They were wrapped in linen and buried in the sand • Heat and dry wind would mummify them • The process of mummification was developed over time

  6. Mummification process part one • First, organs were removed. • The brain came out through the nose • The stomach, liver, intestines, and lungs were taken out through a cut in the stomach • These organs were preserved and put into canned jars and buried in the body

Mummification process part two • The body was stuffed and covered with natron (powdered salt) • The body was then placed on a slanted table • The salt would dissolve the fat and release the body’s liquids • This lasted 30-40 days and then the salt was removed • The body would now be dried and shrunken

Mummification process part three • The skin is cared for • The body is rubbed with perfume and then washed with milk and wine • It is covered in resin • The inside of the body, eye sockets, and nostrils were stuffed to keep the shape • The body is then decorated with jewelry and carefully wrapped in up to 20 layers of cloth • The head was often covered with a mask

  9. Mummification process part four • The mummy is then placed in a coffin or set of coffins • These are often decorated • Pictures of Gods and Goddesses • Possessions from their life • Written words for protection • Mummifications and burials were always done in the name of Anubis
