  3. Background • The Sepoy Army was made up of Indian Soldiers that fought for the British • They had feelings of Resentment towards the British for their control and their poor treatment of the natives.

Animal Fat Conteroversey • Sepoy soldiers were issued new rifles • Sepoys were to bite off end of the cartridge before loading bullets into the rifle • Cartridges were rumored to be greased with animal (cow and pig) fat -Cow is sacred to Hindus and pig is forbidden for Muslims -Group of Sepoys refused to load rifles with new bullets and British soldiers arrested them

  6. SepoyRebellion 1857 Sepoys that refused to use the cartridges were jailed The next day, the Sepoysrebelled • Other Sepoys went on rampage and killed 50 European men, women and children.

  7. Sepoy Rebellion -The rebellion was quickly crushed by Britain. -It took a little over a year for the British East Indian Company regain control -Many of the rebellion leaders were killed in a public display The Fate of rebellious Indians

  8. Result • The British take Direct Rule in India -British Parliament transferred power and control of India from British East India Company directly to British government -Queen Victoria becomes Empress of India (Jewel of the Crown)
