  3. MSDS • Identity (Name of substance) • Physical Hazards • Health Hazards • Safe Handling Procedures • Personal Protective Equipment • Emergency First Aid • Contact Information • Special Instructions including disposal

  4. PROPER LABELING • Primary Container • Manufacturer provides labels containing identity, appropriate hazard warnings, and name and address of manufacturer

  5. SECONDARY LABELING • If chemical is transferred from original container or original label is missing, secondary chemical label must be applied • Label must contain identity of the chemical and all hazard warnings

  6. WORKPLACE HAZARD ASSESSMENT • Hazard assessment to identify potential hazards • Appropriate PPE is assigned • PPE is provided • PPE is properly maintained • Staff is trained on usage of PPE

  7. CHANGES COMING • OSHA revising Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) • United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) • MSDS will be known as SDS • Phasing in over several years (Dec 2013 – June 2016)

  8. TRAINING REQUIREMENT • December 1, 2013 • Label elements • Product identifier • Signal word (Danger, Warning) • Pictogram • Hazard Statements • Precautionary Statements • Name, address, phone of manufacturer

  9. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS CONT • How an employee might use the information on the label • Proper storage • First Aid • General understanding of how the elements work together on the label • Multiple hazards • Most protective information will be on label

  10. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS CONT • Format of the SDS • 16 sections • All sections on the labels will be the same as on the SDS
