Warm-Up • What are concurrent lines? • What is a point of concurrency? • What is a circumcenter and what does it tell us? • What is an incenter and what does it tell us? • How can we use the circumcenter or incenter in the real world?
Geometry Chapter 5.3: Medians and Altitudes of a Triangle
Learning Outcomes • I will be able to identify the medians and altitudes of a triangle. • I will be able to find the points of concurrency for medians and altitudes of a triangle. • I will be able to understand the relationship of the centroid to each median.
Activity • Listen to all instructions before moving. • Get in groups of 3. Each member picks a color Red, Blue or Silver. If you don’t have a group come to the front of the classroom. • One person grab 2 pieces of trace paper for each member of the group. Another should grab a protractor. • You will each draw a different triangle ABC • Reds: Will draw an obtuse triangle labeled ABC. • Blues: Will draw a right triangle labeled ABC • Silvers: Will draw an acute triangle labeled ABC. • Wait for further instructions.
Activity • Take a minute to analyze the similarities and differences in your drawings.
Centroid • The point of concurrency found using the medians of a triangle. • The centroid is used to find the center of balance for a triangle.
Activity • Listen to all instructions before moving. • Get back into your groups of 3. • You will each draw a different triangle ABC • Reds: Will draw an acute triangle labeled ABC. • Blues: Will draw a obtuse triangle labeled ABC • Silvers: Will draw an right triangle labeled ABC. • Wait for further instructions.
Activity • Take a minute to analyze the similarities and differences in your drawings.
Altitudes of a Triangle • The orthocenter is the point of concurrency for the altitudes of a triangle.
Match The Correct Drawing • Circumcenter • Incenter • Centroid • Orthocenter
On a half-sheet of paper. (You can give the other half to the person next to you if you want.) • Pg. 282: 3-11, 39-44 Exit Ticket Homework
