  3. SPIs 7.4 Identify the causes of American involvement in World War I (i.e., security concerns, economic benefits, Wilsonian diplomacy, propaganda).

  4. Objectives • TLW • Create a Propaganda Poster by analyzing the causes of American Induction into WWI • Evaluate the causes of the WWI, by analyzing if they were sufficient enough to enter the conflict, on an Exit Card

  7. Economic Benefits: Money • Who is going to make all of these supplies for European powers(Britain, France, and Russia) • The US • We possession ourselves to make a lot of money from war • Is it right for us to be merchants of death?

  8. Economic Benefits: Money • What WWI does for the US before we enter the war. • Makes a few Industrialist very wealthy • Provides thousands of new jobs to those in the working class

Wilsonian Diplomacy: Isolationism • America did not want to get involved in WWI • WWI is Europe's problem not Americas • President Wilson supports isolationism • Americans loved Wilson stance on Isolationism it became a reason he was reelected in 1916 • Wilson strengthens our military to be a warning for Germany to not mess with us

Wilsonian Diplomacy: Isolationism • Germany got the wrong message when we strengthen our military • They saw this as an of aggression • Meaning: US was getting ready to go to war • 7.4 Identify the causes of American involvement in World War I (i.e., security concerns, economic benefits, Wilsonian diplomacy, propaganda).

Security Concerns: Lusitania • Lusitania • A British Cruise liner that carried tourist • Was this ship in danger? • German submarines sank the Lusitania • 7 May 1915 • Many of those aboard were Americans • What was the American Response to this attack. • 7.4 Identify the causes of American involvement in World War I (i.e., security concerns, economic benefits, Wilsonian diplomacy, propaganda).

Germany’s Response • Between us selling military goods to Britain, France, and Russia, us building up our military as well as the sinking of the Lusitania Germany assumed that war with America was coming quickly • German had a problem • If You are Germany, how do you fight a country that is an ocean away from you? • Become allies with Mexico

Security Concerns: Zimmerman Telegram • A Foreign Diplomat named Zimmerman sent a Telegram to Mexico to propose that Mexico should join the war with Germany against the US who had yet to join the war • The British intercepted the telegram and gave it to the US • The story was leaked to Newspapers • 1 March 1917
