  1. Warm-Up In the following few slides, you will find 14 different organisms, each of them labeled with a letter. Organize them into different groups based on their similarities and differences. You can do as many different groups as you want as long as each organism is part of a group that has 3 or more organisms.

  2. Discuss with your partner Tell each other how you decided to organize and sort the organisms. Were they similar? Different? Did you have problems with some of the organisms, if so which ones? Which way was better? Why?

  3. One Possible Solution Animals Plants ????

  4. Classification of Organisms • The modern classification system was developed by the Swedish scientist Carolus Linnaeus in the mid 1700’s. • Classified organisms by outside appearance, internal organs, and how body systems worked. • Along with the two major Kingdoms, Plantand Animal, Linnaeus came up with several sub-classifications for those kingdoms.

  5. Cladograms • A diagram illustrating the relationship between organisms, that is built using shared or derived traits. • Evolutionary tree of traits

  6. Dichotomous Key • A tool used in the identification of plant or animals • It is written as a sequence of paired questions, the choice of which determines the next pair of questions until a name or identification is reached.
