
Fuel • A substance that burns in oxygen to produce heat
Fossil Fuels • Formed from the remains of organisms that lived millions of years ago • They are composed of mainly hydrogen and carbon and are called hydro carbons
Hydrocarbons. • These are compounds that contain hydrogen and carbon only. • They burn to produce carbondioxide and water.
The greenhouse effect • Heat from the sun is trapped by Carbon dioxide and other gases. This causes the temperature of the Earth to rise.
Acid rain • Sulfur and Nitrogen, emited gases from burning fossil fuels and car exhausts, all dissolve in rainwater making it acidic.
Sulfuric Acid – Sulfur dioxide produced when we burn fossil fuels. It dissolves in rainwater to make sulfuric acid • Nitric acid – Nitrogen produced by car exhausts dissolves in water vapour to form Nitric acid
