  1. Warm-up • Pick up the slip of paper on the front counter titled “14th Amendment” Follow the instructions. • If you did not turn in the Citizenship Vocabulary already- have it out to be checked

Warm-up Answer: 14th Amendment All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of the citizens of the United States, nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

  3. Notebook Set-up • You will take notes using the Cornell method of note-taking. • Notes are taken on right hand side pages. • Processing activities will be on the left side pages

  4. Begin organizing the unit pages for Citizenship as follows: • Page 9- Title it “Citizenship Unit”. This is your Table of Contents. You must list your pages here.

  9. Reading Activity Read the article “ What makes a Person a Citizen” with your 3:00 partner. When you are finished discuss and answer the following questions with your partner. • Who is automatically considered a US citizen? • What is an ‘illegal immigrant” ? • If you are not a born citizen, how can you become one? • What is considered one of the most important benefits of being a US citizen? • Name some ways to enter the US legally? • What are some of the challenges illegal aliens face?

  10. Title the next clean right hand page “US Citizenship” To begin, separate you paper into 2 columns by drawing a line down 1/3 of the way over. The left column is for questions The right column is for notes supporting the question

  11. What is a US citizen? An individual with certain rights and duties under a govt and who, by birth or choice, owes allegiance to that govt

  12. How does the 14th Amendment define who may obtain US citizen? “ All persons born or naturalized in the United States…” 1868

  13. How to become a citizen of the United States by birth? • Born on U.S. soil (any of the 50 states or Washington DC) • Born in a U. S. territory (like Guam or Puerto Rico) • Born on a U.S. military base anywhere in the world • If one or both parents are citizens and you are born anywhere else in the world.

  14. How to become a citizen through the naturalization process? • Takes about 5 years • know about of American history and principles. • demonstrate the ability to read, speak and write in English.

  20. My example summary • Today we learned about the 2 ways someone could be declared a citizen of the United States. The 14th Amendment is important to citizenship because it addresses the two ways. We also learned about non-citizens living in the U.S.
