  1. Unit 14: Ancient Rome Taught by: Hannah Ray, Hannah Bauerle, and Nicole Hinds

Vocabulary • Gladiator: A slave or captive who is armed with a sword or other weapon and is forced to fight to the death in a public arena against another gladiator or wild animal for the entertainment of spectators. • Republic: A form of government where the people elect leaders to govern them. • Dictators: Leaders with almost absolute power. • Roman Senate: A counsel of wealthy and powerful romans who help advise the cities leader. • Veto: To prohibit actions by other officials. • Checks and Balances: A method of balancing power. • Civil Law: A legal system based on written code or law. • Corruption: The decay of peoples values.

Rome’s Geography • Physical Features: • Rome is a peninsula. • It is a very mountainous region. • It was built on relatively low ground, opposed to a dominating high ground. • Human Impact: • The Romans used the peninsula to there advantage. Because a peninsula is a strip of land with water surrounding all three sides, it gave them a great trading advantage.

  4. Leaders/Important People • Constantine: A leader of Rome • Role: Constantine spread the religion of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire. He also named the new capital of Rome Constantinople. • Julius Caesar: A general and leader of Rome • Role: A famous general who became leader. After naming himself dictator for life for life, je lost popularity with the people.

  5. The Contributions of Rome • Rome gave many contributions to other civilizations. Some of them consist of Aqueducts, roads, sewers, etc. • Aqueducts: Aqueducts are channels of water that pass through the mountains to reach the cities or surrounding land. These waterways provided the ability to create a civilization with out having to be near freshwater. • Sewer System: The sewer system kept Rome’s water very clean. It provided a way for Rome to get rid of waste without having to dispose of the water into a river.

  6. !!Conflicts!! • During this time period Rome fought a series of five wars called The Punic Wars. The city the were fighting was called Carthage. • There were not many geographic struggles in Ancient Rome. But one was the mountains. The mountains made it hard to feel the city if there was an invasion if the invaders were coming from the cost.
