  1. PH electronics “Headquarters”Refurbishment status

  2. Refurbishment • Air-conditioning in labs • Completely new infrastructure required: • Central cooling unit on roof of bat 13 • New water distribution network • Cooling units in labs • Completed, but 2 labs not yet connected • New electrical installation in labs • Completed • Corridors: • New ceilings: Not yet fully finalized • Paint doors and walls: Done • New lights: Done • New fire detection: Not yet fully finalized • (decoration) slide 2

  3. Offices: • Painting: Done • Entrance: • New floors: Done • Painting: Done • New ceiling (partial): Done • New radiators: Done • New lights: Done • Automate “corner”: Done, Furniture to be installed • “Murs de affiche”: “Done”, Good idea but bad execution. • Vitrine: Awaiting final order • Outside: Awaiting CERN master plan • Two benches for “smoking corner”. • Bike parking places to be moved to back court slide 3

  4. New bath rooms • Completed but lots of minor problems: • Leaks: Holes in new tiled walls to find cause • Ventilation: Smelling from new toilets • Cellars: • Refurbishment of SS-14 for pool storage: Done • SS-13: • Storage area for LHC spare parts: Done • Technical installations for cooling system: “Done” • Renovation of floors (with asbestos): Partially done • Renovation of electrical installations: Planned • Flooding problems: Not solved • Technical investigations ongoing • Multiple causes • Painting and renovation of wooden walls on hold because of flooding problems • Installation of flooding detection/alarm to firebrigade • Cellar unusable until real solution to flooding problem found. • Affected users: PH-ESE storage and labs, LHCb, CLOUD, DT slide 4

  5. 13-2-005: Auditorium refurbishment • Painting: Done • New ceiling with new lights: Done • New ventilation system (with aircond.): To be finalized • Old system removed • Airconducts in room itself done • New ventilation/aircond. system be installed (before summer 2014) • Awaiting video conferencing system finalization • New ceiling in corridor to be installed. • Roof of Bat 14 • In bad state and this seems known since long time • Leaks • Repairs of bad quality • Major repair required • May require scaffolding around whole building !. • Refurbishment should have been done when scaffolding installed for window replacement !. slide 5

  6. Stores/blinds: • In general bad state: Every storm destroys a few • With danger of somebody getting injured ! • Continuous localized repairs made • General refurbishment required • Should have been done when installing new windows ~5years ago slide 6

  7. Summary • Most of our refurbishment work finalized • Remaining: • Flooding in cellar -> Seriously affects works and our use of cellar • Roof of bat. 14, • Finalize 13-2-005 auditorium • Refurbish Stores/blinds • Small things to finalize: Ceilings, toilet problems, etc. • Comments • Work not of “Swiss quality”: Always take cheapest offer ! • Work has taken a loooong time to finish. • We should have made a global refurbishment of whole building • Very difficult/impossible when people still living/working in building • Not enough money • Interface between “players” not always clear: • Client (us) • PH-AGS-SI • GS and the many different parts of GS • Companies • Who follows up on what ? • Memory in system seems limited: Known problems forgotten • Lots of knowledge seems to have disappeared when “old generation” has retired from GS • Significant delays when frame-contracts change • Clearly not enough money for CERN infrastructure refurbishment • Many thanks to: Marie-Noel, Jacques, Bart and Juny slide 7

  9. Reminder • Reasons for relocation (and making one group) • Get people closer together to enable good daily exchange of experience/expertise/ideas in the electronics domain related to all the different projects we are doing in a large variety of domains (micro-electronics to standard instrumentation) • Assure appropriate lab infrastructure for all our different activates: Clean room – IC testing - opto – general labs – mini mechanical workshop – storage – etc.. • But also keep in mind: • Maintain close/regular contacts with our clients/project partners (experiments) slide 9

  10. Offices • General principle • Long term staff gets individual office to the extent possible. • Large rooms used for multiple students/visitors/fellows/etc. • Air-conditioning • CERN does not any more “allow” to have air-conditioning of individual offices unless for specific reasons. • Exceptions in ESE: • Top floor that can get very hot in summer • 5th floor installed before new “CERN rule” on this. • Offices on south corner getting exceedingly hot in summer because of bad general thermal insulation of our old building. • Comment: Air-conditioning in labs not intended to cool offices via corridor keeping all doors open. • All offices have been painted and should be in good shape. • Remaining: • New lightning • Radiator thermostats • ? slide 10

  11. Labs/workshops • All new labs have been refurbished with appropriate flexible electrical installations (power rails at ceiling) and air-conditioning (some not yet connected to global cooling system). • Each lab is run by a lab responsible that takes care of general state of lab. All other users of labs must agree with this “lab master” on how and when to use the lab. • To prevent complete anarchy seen in some labs in the past. • Same principle applies to all our major instruments: https://ph-dep-ese.web.cern.ch/ph-dep-ese/group_internal/instruments/ESE_Inventory.htm • Electronic keys (not yet on all labs in 5/6th. floor) • Default: People in section have access • Additional access can easily be added (Evelyne) • Electronic keys keeps a log of who have had access when (big brother watching you, that we will hopefully never use) • Unexpected “feature”: Cards must be refreshed once per month via dedicated terminal in building entrance (or on terminal in Evelyne’s office) • Some labs will have particular access restrictions for safety reasons: • Radioactive sources, X-ray machines, Laser labs, Mechanical workshop. slide 11

  16. Meeting/training/terminal • 14-4-010: Small meeting room • Booking via Indico (by group members) • Projector, Computer, Camera, Microphone, Phone: Equipped for EVO and phone conference. • Will soon get electronic key • 14-5-22: Training/Termial/Meeting/ME library , , room • Booking via Indico (by group members) • Projector • Electronic key slide 16

  17. Common facilities Large meeting room: 13-2-005 Coffee Paradise Central point for many informal discussions. Only kept alive if certain turnaround(should be OK now) • Old and worn out • Seats keeps people awake • Refurbishment in planning. • Painting, projector • Air-conditioning, heating, seats ? • Public meeting room with booking via Indico slide 17

  18. Planned work (2011) • Finalize refurbishment of cellar of 13: • Component storage • Nitrogen protected storage (bare dies, wafers and delicate components) • 1 -2 labs with infrequently used equipment (Egun, climatic chambers, etc.) • Renovation of sanitary installations • Refurbishment of building entrance • Additional parking places when removing old barracks • “Controlled” car access to back yard • Refurbishment of global chilled water distribution in building. New cooling plant and connection of remaining cooling units in our labs. • New ceilings and painting of corridors in 14. • Painting of stair cases • Other: • Renovate small elevator (just replace “wooden” panels) • Noisy escape stairs • ? slide 18

  19. Entrance refurbishment • Entrance very visible from CERN main road • General refreshment strongly needed • Should be more welcoming. • Get rid of bicycle mess in front • Allow smokers to have a decent place outside with appropriate ash trays. • Allow appropriate use of coffee automates with minimal mess generated from this. • Use available space to have small permanent exposition of electronics/detectors for HEP. • Easy to maintain and keep clean • An initial study has been done by an architect. • Asbestos removal in floor glue: 16k (CERN policy to do this now) • Internal refurbishment: 60k (of which~ 10k for vitrine) • External + bicyles + stair case + water fountain + information panel: ? • WHO PAYS: GS, PH, ESE, ? slide 19

  24. Conclusions • I think we are now very well installed and have all required infrastructure available. • There will still be major work to do this year: • Entrance, Sanitary, Chilled water, Corridors, Stair case, Meeting room, Cellar of bat 13. • I hope financial constraints (or asbestos problems) will not delay this work. • Thanks to you all to have made this possible • PH and GS management (funding and support) • PH-SMI: Jean-Loup, Marie-Noelle, Jacques, Sebastian. • GS: Christophe Martel, Barthelemy Gossuin • ESE: Patrick Petit • All of you who have made this relocation smoothly and efficiently. • When all finalized, I can propose that we organize an open day for visits by our colleagues and collaborators at CERN. • Please let me know of ideas/requests for further improvements. • I think we are now very well installed, even though some of you may have been dreaming about this: slide 24
