  7. Christian opposition • Biblically based • Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers. (Gen 9:25) • Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything (Col 3:22) • Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. (Eph 6:5)

  8. And more… • Newton continued as slave trader for 6 years after conversion • Apartheid • Dutch Reform Church • God ‘deliberately divided people into different races’ – the whites being superior to blacks

  9. Equality? • In Christ's family there can be no division into Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. Among us you are all equal. That is, we are all in a common relationship with Jesus Christ. (Gal 3:28 Message) • Spiritual • Physical • Holistic

  10. Grand sweep of scripture • God rescues and redeems from slavery • “I am the LORD… I will free you from being slaves… and I will redeem you.” (Exod 6:6)

  11. Grand sweep of scripture • "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour.” (Luke 4:18,19)
