History • Prior to European settlement, Australia was home to over 250 native groups. • Britain laid claim to the land in the 1700s and began transporting criminals to the new land. • Developed into a federation in 1901.
Port Arthur in Tasmania- largest criminal housing facility set up by British.
Land & Climate • 6th largest country in the world. • Also a continent. • Tasmania, an island to the south, is also part of Australia. • Plateaus & lowlands cover most of the country.
Continued • The interior is pastureland named “The Outback”. • Stations are found in this region. • Artesian Basin- water pools located underground- supply water to farmers.
