Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom In this class you will be using an array of technological tools (like the HP Notepad of which most of you are familiar with) and various software applications (platforms) as well. SOME of these applications we will begin with in this first unit are noted at the right → Software Apps: • G-mail • School-rack™ • Class-marker™ • Glogster™ • Skype™/Plurk™ • Et al

  6. Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom Oh, by the way… Like all technologies there will be frustration and confusion… Be patient and ask for help but DON’T QUIT!!! You CAN get in touch with technology!!!

  7. Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom SO-0-0-0-0 Let’s get started!!! FIRST… You will need a gmail account that will ONLY be used in conjunction with School-rack™ electronically submitted/graded assignments. Software Apps G-mail – • Power up your HP Notepad and log on. Then go to the internet Google™ search engine. Once you are ready we will proceed to the Smart-Board display and follow my directions. When we are done you will… • Record your username & pass-code in your agenda.

SECOND… You will need to locate my School-rack™ website and proceed to create your personal class account.. http://www.schoolrack.com/ Software Apps SchoolRack™: • Using the Google™ search engine type in Schoolrack and open its home page. Once you are there we will proceed to the Smart-Board display and follow my directions. • Note the site’s URL, your username & your pass-code in your agenda.

THIRD… You will need to locate and then navigate your ClassMarker™ personal account that will be used for all formal classroom assessments. http://www.classmarker.com/ Software Apps ClassMarker™: • Using the Google™ search engine type in ClassMarker and open its home page. Once you are there note the Smart-Board’s “split-page”. • On the right-hand page you will note your username and pass-code. Record these in your agenda and then log in.

FOURTH… You will need to Google Up the Glogster™ homepage and then wait for me… http://www.glogster.com/ Software Apps Glogster™: • Open the home page and then notice the Smart-Board’s “split-page”. • On the right-hand page you’ll see a couple of do’s & don’ts… note these as well as your username and pass-code; recording them in your agenda. • Log in making sure your account is correctly set up and then log out for now.

Since we will be “Skyping” & “Plurking” via the Smart-board… there will be no foreseeable need to create an account of your own for class purposes. http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/homepage Software Apps Skype™: • We will Skype with my wife’s class in order to check out the system for now. • Throughout the school year we will be Skyping with university professors, graduate students, other US classes and from around the world in order to complete various in-depth experimental projects.

SIXTH… Et-al Software Apps Et al: • This is a Latin term that means… “and others…” • For our use here it means ---there will be other applications that we will be learning & using over the course of the school-year (like “applets” and “modelings”).

  13. Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom FIRST The HP Notepad Technology - Hardware HP Notepad: • The Notepad is located in the charging cart in room 213. • You will be assigned a notepad number that corresponds with the shelf-slot number that it sits upon.

Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom FIRST The HP Notepad Technology - Hardware HP Notepad: • The Notepad has a camera and speakers built into it (we will use those later with Glogster™ applications); • You MUST return your notepad to its proper shelf location within the charge cart & PLUG IT IN!!! (You want yours charged just like those students in classes after yours).

Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom SECOND The IPad Technology - Hardware IPad: • The Ipad also has a camera and speakers built into it (we will use those later when we Plurk™ with the Science Center of St. Louis and NASA’s Ames Research Center); • You MUST return your IPAD’s to your teacher completely powered down.

Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom THIRD “Free” Web camera (stand alone web-cam) Technology - Hardware Stand-alone Web-Cam: • The stand-alone or “free standing” web camera we will be using for Skyping & Plurking is a Logitech much like the image to the left; • And – it will be mounted next to the Smart-board @ the Teacher’s Station to your right.

Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom THIRD “Gooseneck” or Stereoscope camera (usb interfaced) Technology - Hardware USB linked Gooseneck” or Steroscope: • The stand-alone gooseneck camera will be used with student demonstrations &/or optical microscopes. • And – it will be mounted next to the Smart-board @ the Teacher’s Station to your right.

Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom FOURTH “Compound” Light Microscope (usb interfaced) Technology - Hardware USB linked Compound Light Stereomicroscope [SIUE-ITQ Grant]: • The compound stereo microscope & its USB interface is provided on loan from SIUE ITQ grant for us to use. • It will interface with your HP Notepad, Ipad, or the Smartboard for integration with your labs. • It is expensive (over $4,000) and a favor to us… let’s be extra careful when it is in the lab or classroom.

Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom FIFTH “Flip” Cam (usb interfaced) Technology - Hardware USB linked “Flip” Camera: • The “flip” camera uses the ISB port to recharge &/or download. • It will interface with your HP Notepad, the Ipad, and/or the teacher’s station. • Please make sure you wipe off your recordings after downloading to your targeted computer or flash-drive and return to me.

Unit One: Technology & Parts of the Atom SIXtH Digital “Still” Camera (usb interfaced) Technology - Hardware USB linked Digital “Still” Camera: • The “Still” (image) camera uses the ISB port to download. • It will interface with your HP Notepad, the Ipad, and/or the teacher’s station. • Please make sure you wipe off your recordings after downloading to your targeted computer or flash-drive and return to me.
