The Debate on Spontaneous Generation: Experiments by Redi, Spallanzani, and Pasteur
This exploration delves into the historical belief in spontaneous generation, where life supposedly arose from nonlife. We examine the experiments of Francesco Redi, who demonstrated that maggots on meat originated from flies, and Lazzaro Spallanzani, who tested whether microorganisms came from air or other organisms. Despite objections, his findings laid the groundwork for Louis Pasteur’s groundbreaking work, proving that all living things arise from other living entities, thus ending the idea of spontaneous generation and establishing the principle of biogenesis.

Warm up There are two containers on my desk, both containing chicken broth that came from the same can. The container on the right was left out all weekend. The container on the left was closed and refrigerated. Why is there a difference between the two and what is the cloudy material in the broth?
Spontaneous Generation At one time, people believed that life came from nonlife!!! People believed that mice could be created by placing damp hay and corn in a dark corner! Spontaneous Generation: Living organisms developing from nonliving material. Life from non-life
RediExperiement Francesco Redi: 1668 Redi Experiment Redi designed an experiment to prove that maggots on meat came from flies, AND NOT MEAT!
Redi Experiment While Redi’s experiment proved maggots did not come from meat, many believed they could have came from the air. People believe air contained “VITAL FORCE” and microorganisms arose from that “”vital force”.
Spallanzani’sExperiement LazzaroSpallanzani: 1729-1799 Spallanzani designed an experiment to test if microorganisms formed not from air, but other microorganisms.
Spallanzani’s Experiment Opponents of Spallanzani objected to his experiement. They believed he heated the broth too long and killed the “vital force” in that air. Without that “vital force” of course the flask with broth was unable to create life!
Pasteur’s Experiment Louis Pasteur: 1822-1895 Pasteur Experiment Pasteur designed an experiment to test that microorganisms came from other microorganisms and not air or spontaneously.
Biogenesis All living things come from other living things!!!!
