  2. What is Meningitis? • A serious infection that affects - the delicate membrane around the brain - spinal chord • 1st described in 1805 • Feel very ill and urgent that you get to a hospital • A Bacterial infection • Meningococcal

  3. History • 1800’s -lumped together with many other diseases under “Brain Fever” • 1806-Dr. Vieussuex identifies it as a separate disease. *very fatal • 1906-Dr. Jochmann makes anti-serum *death rates drop • 1914-1918- hits all countries involved with WW1

  4. History Continued • 1928- Major epidemic in China and spreads all over world -anti-serum useless • 1932-Gerhard Domagk makes first effective anti-biotic • 1970-Vaccine created • 1996-worst meningitis outbreak in history

  6. Who is Most Susceptible? • Elderly • Babies • Kids and Teens • Those with weak immune systems • In the US and UK, the Spring and Winter • Sub Sahara Africa

  7. Symptoms Babies or young kids- • Cry • Fever • Vomit • Not eating • Limp • Pale skin • Sleepy • Rash Adults- • Bad headache • Stiff neck • Photophobia • Drowsiness • Confusion • Seizures • Fever

  8. How does Meningitis spread? • Colonization in healthy people • Close contact - Kissing - Sneezing and coughing • Outbreaks in schools and military training camps
