  28. Warm-Up Who had the better plan for Texas? Houston or Lamar?

  29. Learning Target I can identify the issues and events during the Republic of Texas.

  30. Council House Fight Lamar wanted to get rid of TX NA. After many attacks the NA decided to meet w/ TX to discuss peace. However things took a turn for the worst when both sides refused to return captives. Comanche leaders tried to leave the meeting but were attacked by TX. Fighting broke out and many TX and NA were killed.

  31. Santa Fe Expedition Lamar wanted to expand the border of TX. The Treaty of Velasco set the border between Mex. & TX at the Rio Grande, which extends all the way into CO. This meant Santa Fe, NM would be on TX territory, not Mex. Lamar decided to send TX troops to Santa Fe to force people to be part of TX. People of Santa Fe refused and attacked the Texas soldiers. Tx surrenders and were sent to Mex. prison. This event was a waste of money and supplies and increased tensions w/ Mex. * Santa Fe

  32. Archives War Houston wanted to move the capitol of Texas because he felt that it was an easy target for both Native Americans and Mexicans to attack. However many Lamar supporters felt Houston just couldn’t handle being president in “Lamar’s capital.” As Houston tried to relocate, he still needed the state archives. However, Lamar supporters were unwilling to give these up. As Houston supporters tried to take the archives, Lamar supporters fired a cannon at them. Needless to say, the archives and capitol stayed in Austin. See – Think - Wonder

  33. Mier Expedition In 1842, Mexican soldiers took control of San Antonio and then retreated to Mexico. Seeking revenge, Texas soldiers went into Mexico. 176 TX soldiers were soon captured by Mex. Forces. Santa Anna ordered 1 out of 10 be put to the death and the rest thrown in Mexican prison for life. See – Think - Wonder

  34. Regulator-Moderator War Texans from different counties could not agree on whose land was whose. With complete abandonment for the law, they took matters into their own hands. Eventually Houston sent 600 troops to put an end to the feud between the two sides.
