  1. Warm-Up What was the main purpose to having so many missions in Texas? Please answer in 2 complete sentences.

  2. Spanish Texas 1763-1819

  3. Vocabulary Define: Alliance – an agreement between two or more nations, peoples, or groups to work together. Filibuster – an individual who carries out rebellious activities in a foreign country Liberation – setting something free Republic – a government in which the power lies with the citizens, who vote for people to represent them.

  4. Spain Acquires Louisiana • In 1763, the Seven Years’ War ends and France loses all of it’s territory in the North America. • The Seven Years’ War was a war between France and Great Britain.

  5. Spain Closes East Texas Missions • Spain realized that it could not protect all of its missions and decided to close the missions in east Texas. • Missions in San Antonio and Goliad were the only missions not abandoned.

  6. In 1800 Spain was forced to give Louisiana back to France. • In 1803 the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for about 15 million dollars.

  8. Disputes About Boundaries • The United States claimed that the American territory extended at least to the Sabine River and possibly included Texas. • Spain claimed that the eastern boundary was a line from the Arroyo Hondo to the Calcasieu River in Louisiana.

  9. In 1819, the United States and Spain signed the Adam-Onis Treaty • Spain gave Florida to the United States and agreed that the Sabine River was the eastern most part of Texas. • In return, the United States gave up all claims to Texas. Spain now owned Texas.

Americans Migrate To Texas • Filibuster - an individual who carries out rebellious activities in a foreign country.. • Philip Nolan - Nolan claimed he was capturing and selling wild horses in Texas for the Spanish government. The Spanish worried about Nolan’s ties to the United States. They attacked and killed Nolan.

  14. General James Wilkinson - Spain hired Wilkinson, a United States Army general, as a double agent. Wilkinson plotted with Aaron Burr to take Kentucky and Louisiana from the United States and start an independent country. The plot failed.
