  4. Battle of Midway– Between 4 and 7 June 1942, significant battle in the Pacific (considered the turning point). After the battle, Japan's shipbuilding and pilot training programs were unable to keep pace in replacing their losses, while the U.S. steadily increased output in both areas. 5. The Bataan Death March – took place in Philippines in 1942 after the Japanese took over the Philippine Islands; it was a forcible transfer of 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war; there were high fatalities due to physical abuse and murder. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8f4wvI5iAM0

  6. The Battle of Iwo Jima (19 February – 26 March 1945), or Operation Detachment, was a major battle in which the United States Armed Forces fought for and captured the island of Iowa Jima from the Japanese Empire. The American invasion had the goal of capturing the entire island, including its three airfields. This month-long battle included some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting of the War in the Pacific of World War II. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrRBgYdPhIg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvRgHzVAfX8

  11. Discussion Question • Why do you think the Flying Tigers were seen as patriotic? • Would you ever volunteer and to risk your life for your country OR • Volunteer to help out another country if you believed it to be right? • If not for country, then what in your life would be worth fighting for?
