  1. Setting Up the Civil War

  2. Advantages Union Confederacy Defending their homeland Had skills that made them good soldiers Many of the best officers in the war Cotton remained profitable on the world market • 4x as many free citizens • Grow more food, make more supplies • 70% of the nation’s rail lines • Strong navy and fleet of trading ships • Manufacturing and industry

  3. Disadvantages Union Confederacy Few factories Few railroads to move troops and supplies Small population (9 mill. vs. 22 mill. in North) More than 1/3 of population was enslaved and couldn’t fight Lack of unity under Confederate Constitution • Had to invade and conquer large amounts of Southern land

  4. Union Strategy • Blockade Southern ports • Riverboats on the Mississippi would split the Confederacy in two • Capture the Confederate capital of Richmond, VA *Became known as the Anaconda Plan

  5. Confederate Strategy • Survive! • Southerners took defensive stances, waiting for the opportune moment to attack • Would even consider invading the North if the opportunity arose

  6. Wartime Technology • Ironclad warships • Rifles • Minié balls (soft lead bullets) • Primitive hand grenades • Early land mines

  7. The Civil War, much like World War I after it, mixed new war technology with antiquated war tactics. This combination helped to set the stage for the bloodiest conflict in American history.
