  5. The Call for Reform • In the late 1800s some big companies used their $$ and power to influence the law • Such practices upset farmers and average citizens because they felt they were treated unfairly • 1 industry that used such practices was the railroad

Railroad Abuses • Texas Railroad companies treated the common citizens unfairly • Charged more for shorter trips than longer trips • Friends rode the RxR for free • Companies banded together to control prices (trusts & monopolies) • Such practices would lead to the Populist Movement (Populism)

  7. Hogg and the Populists • Populism was a movement of farmers and ranchers who did not benefit from the urban lifestyle and unfair business practices • Populists wanted to reduce the power of the wealthy • Populists demanded the gov’t regulate business, end monopolies, reform labor

  8. Hogg’s Fight for Reform • James Hogg would lead the Populism movement in Texas. • Achievements: • Sued companies who weren’t following the law • Broke up the Texas Traffic Association Trust because it created an unfair monopoly • Passed a state antitrust law, which made monopolies illegal

  9. 5. Created the Tex. RR Commission 6. Ended price fixing, unreasonable shipping costs, and unfair practices by all Tex. RR companies

  10. Legacy of the Populist Movement • Slowly Populism died. • The movement would eventually lead to: • Shorter work days • Government regulation of businesses • Laws against monopolies and trusts • Greater taxes on the rich • Direct election of senators • Secret ballot voting
