  1. Plants Wednesday 09/12/2012

  2. Goal for the Day Be able to distinguish major differences between vascular and non-vascular plants Be able to draw the phylogenetic tree of plants and interpret its meaning.

  3. Question of the Day What are the function(s) of the stem?

  4. Stems Functions… Some photosynthesis Support Transport of nutrients through the two Vascular Tissues 1. Phloem – carries food from the leaves to the roots (moves down) 2. Xylem – carries water from the roots to the leaves (moves up)

  5. Phylogenetic Tree Practice!

  6. Phylogenetic Tree of Plants TIME Non-vascular plants (they don’t have vascular tissue) TRUE ROOTS STEMS LEAVES Contain Vascular Tissue, so which groups of plants lack these?

  7. Mosses & Ferns Lab • Why would we do a lab about Mosses & Ferns? (Why would we pick these two?)

  8. Mosses & Ferns Lab • Why would we do a lab about Mosses & Ferns? (Why would we pick these two?) • Because one is a non-vascular plant (Moss), and one is a vascular plant (fern)

  9. Moss

  10. Fern
