  2. What is a Plant? A plant is a living thing that makes its own food, using energy from sunlight. Other living things depend on plants for food and for somewhere to live.

  3. Do all plants have flowers? • Not all plants have flowers. • The simplest kinds of plants do not have flowers. • The simplest plants include mosses, ferns, and conifers, such as pine trees.

  7. The Flowering Plants There are many different kinds of flowering plants. Compared to other plants, flowering plants are “newcomers” on Earth.

  9. Where do flowering plants grow? …in deserts Succulent plants store water in leaves. Saguaro Cactus Hummingbird feeds on cactus bloom.

  11. A Plant Is Born The seed coat splits. The root grows downward. A tiny shoot appears, then breaks through the soil to reach sunlight. The first leaves use the sun’s energy to make food for the plant.

  13. A New Plant Is Born! The life cycle of the plant begins again with the sprouting of the new seeds!
