  1. Warm-Up • EQ – What formed the basis of Nazi party beliefs? • Standard – SSWH18b – Nazi Ideals • Pick up the sheet from the front • On a scrap sheet of paper shared with a partner, make a list of what you know about Adolf Hitler & the Nazi Party • Leave room to add new things

  2. Hitler’s Early Life Childhood through Chancellor

  3. Childhood • Father was abusive to entire family • Bright student through 6th grade; failed twice • Wanted to become an artist • Became extremely nationalistic

  4. FLASHBACK!!! • Remember Martin Luther? • Wrote a book titled On the Jews and Their Lies • Discusses how Jews would lead to the downfall of every great society

  5. Military Service in World War I • Served as a runner • Wounded twice • Was never promoted to officer because he lacked leadership abilities

Effect of the War on Hitler • While recovering second time had major ideas • He was destined to be the savior of Germany • Jews needed to be removed from his country • German culture was far superior and in need of preservation • Felt betrayed by Government at surrender • German armies controlled enemy territory • Had been “undefeated” in battle • No foreign forces ever crossed into Germany

  7. Early Politics • Began spying on the German Workers’ Party • Anti Semitic • Anti-Marxists • Anti-Capitalists • Pro-nationalist • Eventually joined the party and became influential leader • Learned speaking skills while here • Changed party name to National Socialist German Worker’s Party

  8. Early Politics • Party leaders grew worried • Tried to have him removed • Hitler won vote 543 – 1 • Took the title of Führer (Leader or Ruler) of the party • Began to established his own private militia and structure that would be used in his government

  9. Beer Hall Putsch • Inspired by Mussolini’s March on Rome • Began a “Campaign on Berlin” • 16 members killed; Hitler arrested for high treason

  10. Mein Kampf • Written while Hitler was in jail • Means My Struggle • Discusses Jewish conspiracy to dominate the world • Jews wanted to oppress all other peoples • Denounced Communism and Marxism • Laid out Germany’s rebirth onto the world scene

Hitler’s Plan • Germany would escape depression by rearming and ignoring the Treaty of Versailles • Form a military alliance with Italy and the British Empire • Destroy France and her Eastern Europe allies • Take over the Soviet Union to give Germany the necessary Lebensraum (Living space) for new Germans

  12. Rise in National Government • Began to rebuild party once released • Party began to gain many seats in the Reichstag • President Hindenburg would continue to lose support of people • On January 30, 1933 Hindenburg gave Hitler the title of Chancellor.

  15. What were the big ideas? • German culture and race was under attack by many outside forces including: • Jews • Communists/Marxists • Democracy • Racial hierarchy • Aryans at the top • Jews and Gypsies are at bottom

Pillars of Power • Nationalism • One must be unquestioningly loyal to his government • Families must be expanded => LOTS OF BABIES • Militarism • belief that great nations grow from military power and maintained order, which in turn grow “naturally” from “rational, civilized cultures” • Great honor is being a soldier

  17. Pillars of Power • Racial policy • Classic civilizations were made up of a homogenous people • Embraced culture purity • All impurities needed to be cleansed • Minorities • Homosexuals • Disabled, physically and mentally • Eugenics were used to curb “breeding”
