  6. Government • Gained independence from Spain on September 15, 1821 • Republic • A system in which the representatives elected by the people make and enforce laws and policies.

Historical Information • Gained independence from Spain in 1821, and became fully independent from other Central American states in 1838 • Military coup d'état in 1931 against President Araujo, leading to brutal rule of President Martinez • 1979 coup d'état led to bloody, 12-year civil war between U.S. backed El Salvador and leftist rebel groups.

Current Issues • High crime rates are an issue within El Salvador, with much of the crime gang-related. • Natural disasters such as volcanoes, earthquakes and hurricanes can be very damaging to the infrastructure and economy of El Salvador • Economy suffered downturn with global recession, and is slowly recovering today.

  11. Relations with America • Relations are historically strong, dating back to independence • El Salvador is supportive of U.S. military operations, especially within Iraq • More than 19,000 Americans live in El Salvador, and both are major trade partners
