  1. Warm-up • What goals have you set for yourself in the past year? Did you reach your goal? Why or why not?

  3. Objectives • Identify the steps of the decision-making process • Apply the decision-making formula to a variety of situations through in-class practice • Identify the processes involved in choosing and achieving goals • Develop individual goals to improve overall health

  4. Decision-making skills • Steps that enable you to make a healthful decision • 6 basic steps • May be helpful to seek advice from adults or those who have more experience in a certain field

  5. 6 Steps of the Decision Making Process State the Situation List the Options Weigh in the Possible Outcomes Consider Values Make a Decision and Act on it Evaluate your Decision

  6. Step 1: State the Situation • Examine the situation and ask yourself what decisions need to be made? • Consider all facts and who else is involved?

  7. Step 2: List the Options • Possible choices you could make • Share your options with parents, siblings, friends, or peers (?) • Get advice

  8. Step 3: Weigh the Possible Outcomes • Use the acronym HELP to guide you through your choices H- Healthful- What health risks if any will this option present? E- Ethical- Does this choice reflect what you believe is right? L- Legal- Does this option violate any laws? P- Parent Approval- Would your parents or guardians approve of this choice?

  9. Step 4: Consider Values • Values: Ideas, beliefs and attitudes about what is important that help guide the way you live. • Choices will often be a result of your values, however sometimes people will go against their values to please a crowd. NEVER a good idea

  10. Step 5: Make a Decision and Act on It • After going through the previous 4 steps you are not ready to make a decision! • You should feel informed and ready to make a responsible choice

  11. Step 6: Evaluate the Decision • Reflect on the decision you made • Did you like the outcome? • What did you learn? • Would you make the same decision again?

  13. On Your Own • Situation: • Teri’s friend want her to skip school and go to the mall with them. Apply the 6 steps of the decision making process and help Teri to make a responsible choice. • Situation: • What tough decision did you have to make recently? Think about, write it down and we will share with class.

  14. Goal Setting • Goal: something you aim for that takes planning and work • Can increase self confidence, increase self-esteem and help to improve your overall health

  15. Goal Types • Short Term Goal • Can be reached in days or weeks • Long Term Goal • Can be reached in months or years • Sometimes short term goals are actually steps in the process to achieve a long term goal

  16. Achieving your Goals • Action Plan: multistep strategy to identify and achieve your goals • Set a specific realistic goal • List the steps you will take to reach your goal • Identify sources of help and support • Set a reasonable time for reaching your goal • Evaluate your progress • Reward yourself for achieving your goal
