Pattern M Example The application was lost in the mail; consequently, the man was never granted an interview with the company. Step 1: Cross out prepositional phrases. IN THE MAIL/WITH THE COMPANY(IN/WITH= preposition) Step 2: Find the action. WAS LOST/WAS GRANTED(verb) -Underline the verb twice. Step 3: Who or what “was lost/was granted” ? APPLICATION/MAN(subject) -Underline the subject once. Step 4: Is an SV followed by a “;” and conjunctive adverb followed by a comma and another SV? YES PATTERN M
