  2. Curriculum Outcomes: • 3rd grade Grammar • NL-ENG.K-12.4 Communication Skills • NL-ENG.K-12.9 Multicultural Understanding • NL-ENG.K-12.12 Applying Language Skills

  3. Objective: • - Students will be able to apply their knowledge of rules of English grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. • - They will also be able to learn about some accomplishments of famous black Americans.

  4. Introduction • Each morning when the children arrive, we will have one or two sentences written on the notebook software for the smartboard with numerous punctuation, grammar and capitalization errors. • The students will have the opportunity to go up to the smart board and correct one mistake until the sentence is fully correct. • Since we do not have a book to teach the students with me can use this chart to help show all of the punctuation marks that can be used in the English language. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks3bitesize/english/reading/sentences/revise5.shtml) • Ask the students what they did over the weekend and if our classroom had computers the students could type their weekend activities into the grammar tool instead of passing it to a classmate. (http://ed.grammarly.com/editor/view/?f=1# ) • If there are no computers we will ask them to write a half of page paper in their journal. After the students have completed the writing assignment, have them switch with a student and see if they can find grammar mistakes. • Pass out the worksheet of sentences for the students to start at the end of the class and finish for homework. • We are going to show the web 2.0 tools that we have to show the students if their grammar is right and how to correctly punctuate a sentence. • See above link • http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/e3/words/grammar/basicpunctuation/game1.shtml - can be used for fun at home.

  5. Evaluations • Students search for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar errors in a work sheet about famous black Americans. • This evaluation is formally written. • We will grade this worksheet when the children turn them in for homework based on a 100 pt. grading scale.

  6. Commitment to Diversity • This lesson addresses multiple intelligences because it provides for hands-on learners, kinesthetic learners, and individual learners. • Students with special needs will have their aids available with them to help work on the computer and complete the worksheet. • Different cultural backgrounds will be able to be successful on this project because the sentences deal with historical American icons.

  7. Commitment to Technology • The technology we used in this lesson includes; smartboard software, the notebook app, 2 web 2.0 tools, powerpoint & imbedded links. • This lesson is somewhat dry so using different types of technology can enhance the lesson and get kids excited about learning grammar.

  8. Capitalization • billy went to play Basketball with dan. • president George bush and president Obama went to lunch. • Where is manny the monkey and gerry the Giraffe? • 3 mistakes in each sentence.

  9. Punctuation • Some of the rainbow colors include red blue green and orange. • He is ok! Are you ok. • Sit down now • 3 mistakes in first, 2 mistakes in second, and 1 mistake in last.

  10. Use of Grammar • He through the baseball at me. • I found hour toys under the bed. • Weather he was right or not? • 1 mistake for each.
