  2. OVERVIEW OF RESPIRATORY SYSTEM • Body needs energy • Oxygen • Cellular respiration • Abundant • Carbon Dioxide • Waste product • If not transported to lungs build up in the blood • Primary role- bring oxygen from atmosphere & remove carbon dioxide

  3. Closely related to heart and circulatory • Cardiopulmonary system • Both function w/o conscious effort • Structure • Two lungs • Upper and lower airways • Terminal air sacs • Thoracic cage • Muscles of breathing

VENTILATION VERSUS RESPIRATION • The atmosphere air is a mixture of gases • Atmospheric Gases • O2 • CO2 • Argon • Nitrogen • Neon, krypton • The predominate gas • Inert ( does not react in the body) • Still important • Oxygen • Active in body • CO2 • Low in concentration on inhale/ higher on exhale

  5. The system has set of tubes that moves gas from atmosphere to lungs • Occurs with breathing • Two processes of breathing • Ventilation • Respiration • External respiration • Internal respiration • Respiratory therapists

  9. Alveolar- capillary membrane • Connection between the respiratory and cardiovascular systems • Gas exchange takes place • To understand this process you have to understand the respiratory system structure • OXYGEN TAKES A ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!

  11. THE UPPER AIRWAY • Functions • Heating/cooling • Filtering • Humidifying • Olfaction • Phonation • Ventilating

  12. Upper airway starts at the nose and ends at vocal cords • NOSE • Rigid structure • Nasal cavity • Septal cartilage/nasal septum

  13. Vestibular region • Location • Contains coarse nasal hairs • Vibrissae • Covered with sebum • Helps filter out large particles • Sneezing • Olfactory region • Location • Advantage of location

  14. Respiratory region • Functions • No respiration or gas exchange occurs here • Location • Mucous membrane lined- rich blood supply • Turbinates/conchae • Split into 3 channels • Not a straight passageway • Causes turbulence

INTERESTING BODY FACTs • Your breath could detect cancer!!! • Israeli scientists are developing a sensor • Breast, lung, bowel, prostate cancers • Chemicla variations that occur • Mouth breathing • Nose responsible for 1/2 to 2/3 of airway resistance • Airway resistance is the work that is required to move gas down the tube • Larger the tube = less resistance
