  1. Describe the following words: • Light (Radiant Energy) • Chlorophyll • Carbon Dioxide • Oxygen Warm up

  2. Photosynthesis or How Plants Make Food

  3. Autotroph Energy from the Sun is necessary to begin the process. Besides green plants, some algae and bacteria can also make their own food.

  4. Radiant energy from the Sun, in the form of light, begins photosynthesis. Chlorophyll must also be present.

  5. Water is taken into the plant by the roots and carried to the leaves through the xylem . Xylem is a series of tubes. H20 H20 H20

  6. Carbon dioxide gas (CO2) is taken into the plant through the stomata on the underside of leaves. CO2 CO2 CO2 H20 H20 H20

  7. Oxygen gas (O2) is released into the atmosphere through the stomata on the under side of leaves. O2 O2 O2 H20 H20 H20

  8. During Photosynthesis, radiant (light) energy from the Sun is converted into chemical energy through a chemical Reaction. The glucose (a type of sugar) that is produced is used both to keep the plants alive and stored by plants to be used by animals Who then eat the plants.

  9. Water vapor is released into the atmosphere through the stomata on the leaves. H20 H20 H20 This process is called transpiration.

  10. Review the process. CO2 CO2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 H20 H20 H20 H20 H20 H20 Explain each step as it is shown.

  11. Remember, this process is continuous in light. CO2 CO2 CO2 O2 O2 O2 H20 H20 H20 H20 H20 H20

  12. Photosynthesis What is made during photosynthesis that isn’t labeled in the picture?

  13. Photosynthesis Equation 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 Sunlight Carbon + Water Glucose + Oxygen Dioxide (Chemical Energy)

  14. In your journal you will explain photosynthesis using the following pictures and words. Use arrows to show what goes into the plant and what leaves the plant. • Words • Photosynthesis • Water • Carbon Dioxide • Glucose or sugar • Roots • Leaves • Stomata • Chlorophyll • Sunlight • Oxygen • Chemical Energy • Radiant Energy • Pictures CO2 O2 H2O
