The Leading Care Project, led by Cathy McCusker and supported by NIPEC, aims to empower Ward Sisters and Charge Nurses to enhance patient care delivery. The project focuses on fostering a person-centred culture, improving patient experiences, and developing team performance. Key objectives include creating a comprehensive job description and role framework, identifying essential elements for induction and ongoing development, and facilitating effective resource management. Through these initiatives, the project supports succession planning and professional growth in nursing.

Leading Care Project - Aim Support and strengthen the role of Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses so that the post holders are enabled to: • Ensure the delivery of safe and effective care • Promote the development of a person-centred culture • Improve and enhance the patient and client experience • Manage and develop the performance of their team • Participate in the delivery of the organisation’s objectives through the effective management of resources • Challenge appropriately and confidently where standards of care fall below those which the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse would expect.
Project Objectives • Develop a generic job description and role framework • Agree a regional title for the role. • Identify the key elements required for the induction and continuous professional development of Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses • Make recommendations about processes that regionally and within organisations support succession planning for nurses and midwives. • Develop a section on NIPEC website for Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses. • Submit a final project report to Directors of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer.
