  1. Alexander the great Alexander’s personality, military leadership and political objectives become the center of an empire

  2. Meet Alex… • Strong, good-looking, and a student of Aristotle • He learned philosophy, science, geography, lit, and political science • He thought learning was so important that he included philosophers and scientists in his army. • He crushed the mighty Persian army and extended the empire from northern India to Egypt. • Fearless general- WHO NEVER LOST A BATTLE

  3. Dream Big • Alex had a dream: To create a worldwide state where all people live together in peace, unity, and justice. • Reaching the dream: He believed the only way this would happen is if he could unite the Greeks, Persians, and Macedonians. • Alexander attempted to reach his goal by: • Brining Persian soldiers into his army • Marrying a Persian woman, 80 of his military officers did as well • Dressing in the latest Persian fashions * Why do you think he did this?

  4. Barbaroi • Another Persian custom he accepted was the practice of calling himself a god- and he wanted to be treated that way. • This angered the Macedonians and the Greeks • The Greeks also refused to treat the Persians as equals- they considered anyone who did not speak Greek to be a barbaroi- a barbarian. • Because of these hostile feelings Alexander’s dream did not come true.

  5. Alexandria • During his rule he created 70 cities • Most noted- Alexandria, Egypt- he encouraged Greeks to settle there • Became the center of learning and trade of the ancient world • Lighthouse of Alexandria- 1 of the 7 wonders of the ancient world • The museum- the school where Archimedes, Euclid, Hero, and Eratosthenes created their works • Library- most books in the ancient world

  6. It all must come to an End… • Why do you think Alex’s empire fell apart? • Find out- read pages 198- 199 and create your own notes • Pay special attention to changes in political leaders, trade, and customs.
