1. IF YOU HAVE A SNACK/DRINK YOU NEED TO HAVE IT! I WILL NOT LET YOU GO TO YOUR LOCKER!! DO NOT EAT IT YET! Energy Calories Get out your journal and the worksheet you printed in the library yesterday.

2. Journal • What are calories? • Are calories good or bad? Explain. • (Put your snacks under your desk…we will get to them in a bit.)

3. Calories are in any food that contains carbohydrates, proteins or fats. Calories measure the amount of energy or heat is in a food. A calorie is a unit of heat or energy. We need to eat 2000-3000 calories a day. Pg. 95

4. What do you mean calories have heat? 100 calories (medium apple or 2 regular Oreo cookies) is enough to boil an entire quart of water. So how many quarts of water would you be able to boil in a day? (Hint: How many calories do we need a day?) 20-30 quarts of water

5. What is caloric intake? Caloric intake = amount of food/calories we eat What is caloric expenditure? Caloric expenditure = amount of calories we use Pg. 95

6. Carbohydrates and proteins store the least amount of energy (calories), while fats store the most. Carbohydrates = 4 calories per gram Proteins = 4 calories per gram Fats = 9 calories per gram One pound of body fat = 3500 calories. Pg. 95

7. Food Labels • Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture decides what information goes on a food label. • Allow consumers to compare different foods and make healthy choices.

8. 3. How many calories does this food have? 4. What is the serving size of this food? 5. How many calories would you consume if you had 2 potatoes? 6. Many food companies try to keep the calorie count on their product at or below 100. Why? Starbucks 7. How do they do that while still being truthful?

Exit Slip • Food Label (If you don’t have a label, get one from me!) • Name of Food/Drink • How many calories are listed on the label? • What is the serving size of this product? • Does the calorie amount match the serving size? If not, how many calories total are in this package? • What is a calorie? • Goldfish Crackers = 16 svgs per box • Cheerios = 17 svgs per box • Hold onto your worksheet • that you printed yesterday. Make sure you made a favorite food list. YOU CAN EAT/DRINK NOW!! 
