  2. Calorie • The amount of energy in food is measured in calories • Which foods have the most calories?

  3. Calories in Food • Per 1 gram • Protein - 4 calories • Carbohydrate – 4 calories • Fat – 9 Calories • Food label Check Activity • Serving size 1 Bar = 55 grams • Servings per container = 5 • Carbohydrates = 28 grams • Fats = 7 grams • Protein = 15 grams

  4. Empty Calorie • A calorie with no extra benefits such as amino acids, fatty acids, fiber, vitamins, and minerals • Example • Table sugar • A diet that mainly consists of empty calories can causes a person to be malnourished

How many calories do you need? • The energy your body needs at rest • The energy you need to do daily activities • Important to remember - Infants and children generally need to intake higher amounts of calories - Typically a man can consumer more calories then a women due to proportion of muscle and size of body

  6. Resting Energy Expenditure • Activity – Find Your REE • Weight in KG • 1 KG = 2.2 lbs • Male - (15.3 x weight) + 679 • Female - (14.7 x weight) + 496 • Why is this important to know?

Resting Energy Expenditure • Pituitary Gland – Located in your brain, stimulates your thyroid gland which secrets a hormone that impacts the rate at which your tissues burn nutrients to produce energy • Medical Conditions • Hypothyroidism – Burn food more slowly • Hyperthyroidism – Burn food faster

  8. Energy for Work • Very light – 80 – 100 calories • Light – 110 - 150 calories • Moderate 170 – 240 calories • Heavy – 250 – 350 calories • Exceptionally heavy – 350+ calories

  9. Activity 1.) Determine your REE 2.) Add calories you need based on activity level 3.) Determine how many calories you consumed today and will potential consume before you go to bed 4.) Compare ingested calories to the calorie number determined by your activity / REE levels
