  2. A calorie is a unit of heat energy • Calorie = amount of energy needed to raise 1 gram of water by 1 degree celcius • Body sees calories as energy to produce heat • Amount of calories in a food = amount of potential energy the food has

  3. There is a direct relationship between calories and body fat • If you eat more calories than the body uses, the extra calories are stored as body fat • 3500 calories = 1 lb body fat

  4. If the body uses more calories than the amount consumed, it results a loss of body fat • Healthy weight loss = 2 lbs/week • How many extra calories must be burnt to lose 2 lbs in one week? Weight Loss

  5. All foods have calories • Different foods have different amounts • Calories are provided by fats, protein, and carbohydrates Calories and Foods
