  1. The trail of Tears

  2. How did it start? • The Trail of Tears was a name given by the Cherokee tribe that forced their tribe to move to the “Indian Territory.” • The first steps of the Native Americans to their new homeland was in 1838.The U.S kept wanting more and more land and started moving the Cherokee in their southeastern states all the way to “Indian Territory”. • It all started in 1830 the Indian Removal Act which forced the Indians to move to the Mississippi River stated by Andrew Jackson the president at the time. • But in 1838 they were even forced to move further than that, not to mention that they have had battles because some of the Indians wouldn’t move even when forced to. • The tensions of the Cherokee tribe and the U.S grew and things started to get really big.

  3. What the Indians decided to do • They didn’t decide to fight with guns or arrows they decided to go to the Printing Press and asked that if they would not take their homeland away from them. • Georgia didn’t pay attention and dived the Cherokee land to other U.S citizens. • After the state of Georgia demanded that after 25 years people can not force the Cherokee to practice the catholic religion the case ended with that the state had no decision on what to do with the Cherokee only the Government did. • However the government was trying to compromise a treaty with the Cherokee along with Jon Ross the Cherokee Principle.

  4. How they compromised • Ross asked for 5 million dollars along with being treated like a citizen of the United States( the right to vote and to testify in court ect..) • When Georgia and the United States said that was completely unacceptable. • Ross got very furious so than asked 20 million dollars even though that was right U.S could not afford it. • Ross asked for that money because they were being forced all the way from the Mississippi River( which they already had to move to) to Oklahoma. • The compromise was the Treaty of Echota made by the Treaty Party that said if they continue the removal they would get 5 million in return. • However Ross argued that the Treaty Party didn’t even speak for the Cherokee and they should speak for their own but the U.S just ignored them

  5. The first tear drop • In may 1838 federal and state troops invaded the Native Americans forcing them to move. • Ross asked if he could lead them into the colder weather and they granted his request. • They reached there new home land in 1839 if you walk the route they classify it has the Trail of Tears • 16,000 Cherokees walked the Trail of Tears but a fourth of them died along the way.

  6. Years after the Trail of Tears it became a trail that people traveled and a national site. The year long travel had very rough conditions . The Route. Many people died along the way.
