  2. When did the Civil War occur? • The Civil War occurred April 12, 1861 and lasted through April 9, 1865.

  5. Who were the leaders of the Union sides? • Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, John Brown

  6. John Brown(Union Leader) • 1800- Born in Torrington, Connecticut • 1859- He raid on Harpers Ferry. Brown was caught and executed. • He was an active supporter of the underground railroad. • Responsible for the cold blooded massacre of 5 settlers in a proslavery town. • He helped establish an organization to protect fugitive slaves from their captures.

  7. Who were the leaders of the Confederate Sides? • Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Braxton Bragg

  8. Jefferson Davis (Confederate Leader) • 1808- Born in Kentucky on June 3 • 1828- Begins service in the U.S army • November 1845-elected to the U.S House of Representatives • 1853- Begins to serve in the U.S secretary of the war • 1865- Captured by Union Calvary on May 9

  9. Whatwere the main events/ battles of the Civil War? • Fort Sumter-First battle(April 12,1861) • 1st Battle of Bull Run- ( July 21, 1861) • Battle of Gettysburg- (July 1, 1863) • 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher- (January 13-15, 1865) • Battle of Appomattox( Courthouse)- (April 9, 1865)

  11. How did the Civil War affect America’s future. • It brought America together and established a nation. • It ended slavery • Changed everyone’s life overall

  12. How did the Civil War end? • The Civil war ended with the capitulation of General Lee to General Grant, in Virginia at Appomattox court on April 9, 1865.

Interesting Facts • It is also referred to as the "War Between the States" because it was fought between northern and southern states within the U.S. • South Carolina was the first state to separate, followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama and several others. • During the Civil War, glasses with colored lenses were used to treat disorders and illnesses. • Surgeons never washed their hands after an operation, because all of the blood was assumed to be the same.
