  1. Pick up a reading worksheet from the front cart. Imagine the following scenario and talk with nearby students about your feelings about the scenario. Additional information will appear when the bell rings. 一 Bell Ringer (Hey King!) Freedom! You’ve made it through high school and you are about to move out of your house. You’ve found a pretty good job and will be sharing an apartment with your best friend.

  2. Pick up a reading worksheet from the front cart. Imagine the following scenario and talk with nearby students about your feelings about the scenario. Additional information will appear when the bell rings. 一 Bell Ringer (Hey King!) Freedom! You’ve made it through high school and you are about to move out of your house. You’ve found a pretty good job and will be sharing an apartment with your best friend. After helping you move in, your mom/dad/whoever announces that she/he is moving in with you. How does that change your feelings of freedom?

When I read, I do some things that you don’t do. I am going to show you some of those things as I model expert reading to you today.

  4. Think Aloud Questions In the middle of reading, I stop. I stop a lot. When I stop, I ask myself questions. Normally, I ask them silently (in my head). If I said them out loud, I might seem like a crazy person who talks to himself. I’m not that kind of crazy. Root Word Vocabulary Sometimes when I stop, I ask questions about words I think I might know. Every word is made up of roots. For example, theo. I know it from words like theocrat and atheist. When I see a word and I’m not sure, I figure it out right away. 二 Active Reading Demonstration

  5. As a class (meaning we aren’t done until everyone has done it and meaning you can ask for help from nearby students): 1. Find charter, Parliament, compact, and boycott. Circle each word and underline the nearby definition. 2. Find the first four acts mentioned in the reading. Circle each act and underline the four most important words of the nearby description. 3. Find the phrase ‘Intolerable Acts’. Write the names of the two acts that let British soldiers into colonists’ houses under Intolerable Acts. 三 Hey King! Marking the Text (3 parts)

  6. Form groups of three. Send a member of the group up to receive the next page of activities. Phrases to Know Match these six phrases from the Declaration of Independence with its definition. When everyone in your group has the right answers, send someone to the front with every members’ paper. B. Reconstruct the Declaration Using the 4 parts listed as your guide, separate the cutouts into the right parts of the Declaration of Independence. When you are done, call me over. 四 Triad Activities
