  1. KNOWING ABOUT PLEASE ……… “WALK AWAY” DYSLEXIA

  2. Simple definition- -Dyslexia is an often-misunderstood, confusing term for reading problems. The word dyslexia is made up of two different parts: Dys -meaning not or difficult, and Lexia -meaning words, reading, or language. So quite literally, dyslexia means difficulty with words (Catts & Kamhi, 2005). Complete definition- -Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. (Lyon, Shaywitz, & Shaywitz, 2003, p. 2)

  3. Dyslexia: Common Misunderstandings • Writing letters and words backwards are symptoms of dyslexia. • Reading disabilities are caused by visual perception problems. • If you just give them enough time, children will outgrow dyslexia. • More boys than girls have dyslexia. • Dyslexia only affects people who speak English. • People with dyslexia will benefit from colored text overlays or lenses. • A person with dyslexia can never learn to read.

  4. How can we help? • Self esteem is an important component to success. • Family support. • Teacher patience and understanding. • The basic findings indicate that morphological and phonological awareness instruction and explicit phonics instruction significantly improve the abilities of students with dyslexia. (Angela Child, 2011)
