  3. Don’t forget temperament… Your genetic “raw material” personality May include: • Sensitivity • Activity level • Mood • Irritability • Adaptability

If someone wanted to learn about your personalitywhich of the following would most inform them? • Viewing your Facebook profile • Listening to the music on your iPod • Seeing how you decorate your room • Scanning the books on your bookshelf • Looking through the inside of your car, pocketbook, backpack • Knowing your preference(s) of pets, pizza, movies • Reading a teacher’s assessment of your personality • Reading a peer’s assessment of your personality

  5. Trait Theory Describes personality by looking at distinct combinations of characteristics

  6. Gordon Allport • Cardinal traits= all aspects of one’s personality relate to one characteristic • Central Traits= Core traits, usually 6-7 • Secondary Traits=Superficial aspects of personality (food,music,etc.)

  7. Raymond Cattell • Source Traits= 16 basic traits that are usually linked together

  8. What is your “employer” looking for? • How well do you work with others? • What is your energy and drive? • Problem solving.. • How do you react to stress? • How do you react to change?

  9. The Big 5=Cross-Cultural support Openness= new experiences Conscientiousness= responsible, dependable Extroversion= outgoing, active, social Agreeableness= considerate, likable, tolerant Neuroticism= Anxious, self conscious, emotional
