Enhancing Reading and Writing Skills: Direct Instruction & Collaborative Activities

In the upcoming lessons, students will practice six key thinking strategies to improve their reading comprehension, including prediction, visualization, relation, monitoring, correction, and annotation. Additionally, students will engage in SAT essay writing, focusing on crafting introductory paragraphs. Collaborative exercises will foster creativity through story development utilizing vocabulary words. Students will also participate in discussions and complete packet assignments by April 20, enhancing their understanding of literary forms and vocabulary.

  2. Direct Instruction: Monday 4/16 “Shatter Proof” Today we will practice the six thinking strategies used by good readers: predict,picture, relate, monitor, correct, and annotate. Participate in the class reading *Handout will be provided *Answer Thinking and Writing questions and turn in before class ends. Friday 4/13 SAT Writing Prompt Last week, we discussed the true nature of the SAT essay and how they are scored. During direct instruction, we will start writing our own SAT essays, primarily the introductory paragraph. *handout will be provided. Literary Element #3—Form Download the PDF packet from the SAT Prep class website. Today we will examine SAT selections focused on prose, poetry, and drama. Collaborative Station: Wednesday 4/17 Vocabulary Story Development You may work with a partner or on your own. This exercise will allow you to work out those creative writing muscles. With a partner, write a story using the ten vocabulary words. Just in case you were wondering, yes—your story has to make sense. Interpretation Discussion Questions Within your assigned Collaborative group, answer the questions listed on the handout. Be sure to follow the directions carefully. Packet due by Friday, April 20.
