  1. CHAPTER 2Section 1 – Measurement : A Common Language

  2. DO NOW • When we measured the room in “shoes” we all got different answers. Why is it important to have a common system of measurement?

  3. The Metric System • Countries around the world decided a universal measuring system would minimize confusion. Scientists in France developed the metric system based on the number “10”.

  4. The International System of Units (SI) • The SI is a standard system of measurement that allows scientists to compare data and communicate with each other about their results.

  5. It’s kind of like our money… 10 pennies make a dime. 10 dimes make a dollar.

  6. What is length? • When do you need to know length? • Length is the distance from one point to another. • The basic UNIT of length in the SI system is the meter.

  7. 10 mm = 1 cm 100 cm = 1 meter 1000 mm = 1 meter

  8. Long Distance • You’d probably measure this is in kilometers. • 1 kilometer = 1000 meters!

  9. Short Distance • Length of an eyelash or thickness of a coin • Millimeters • Milli = one one-thousandth • Length of a finger • Centimeters • Centi = 1 one one-hundredth

  10. Tools to Measure Length • Metric Ruler • Meter stick

  11. What is Mass?

  12. What is Mass?? • Mass is a measure of the amount of matter or “stuff” in an object. • SI Unit for Mass • Kilogram (kg) • Tools to measure mass • Balance • Triple beam balance

  13. Measuring mass smaller than a kilogram • Grams • 1 gram is about 1 paperclip • Milligrams • There are 1000 milligrams in 1 gram

  14. Measuring mass using kilograms • Bicycles, cars, people • 1 kilogram is about 1 wooden bat

  15. DO NOW • When is it helpful to know how much space something takes up?

  16. Volume • = the amount of space an object takes up

  17. Volume of Liquid • Tools to measure volume of a liquid:

  18. Volume of Liquid, cont’d - The SI unit is the Liter (L) - Also measured in milliliters (mL) - There are 1000 mL in every Liter.

  19. Volume of Rectangular Solids • Volume = Length x width x height • V = L x W x H - The SI unit is the cubic centimeter (cm3 ) or the cubic meter (m3)

  20. Which of these volumes would you want to measure in cm3? Which would you measure in m3?

  21. Volume of an Irregular Solid

  22. In your Notebooks: • What is the definition of volume? • What are 2 tools to measure volume? • What is the unit of volume?
