  2. Alexander was born… • On March 3, 1847 • At 16 South Charlotte Street Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

  3. In 1870, Alexander moved to Canada • He lived on a farm in Brantford, Ontario • Continued his work with electricity and sound • Gave lectures in the USA

  4. In 1872… • Alexander opened a School of Vocal Physiology and Mechanics of Speech in Boston • He taught Helen Keller • He also became a professor at the Boston University

  5. Inventing the telephone • The telephone started as a harmonic telegraph • In 1875, Bell was able to create a telephone like device • In 1876, Bell had successfully made a telephone that worked over 4 miles away

  6. With out the Phone, • Just about every war after 1876 would have been lost • We would have telegraph booths instead of phone booths • We wouldn’t have cell phones, pagers, fax machines, or iPhones • Texting would be Morse code, sent from a telegraph in your house, to another one in your friends.

  7. Other work Alexander also worked on many things, like… • Hydrofoils- Struts on boats that make them faster • Metal detector- First made to find a bullet in U.S. President James Garfield. • Aeronautics- Heavier-than-air flying machines were still just being developed

  8. Family life • Bell married on of his students,Mabel Hubbard. • They had 4 children, 2 boys, and 2 girls. Both boys died in infancy.

  9. Death and controversy Alexander died in 1922 due to complications from diabetes, leaving a huge controversy behind. Who takes credit for the telephone, Canada, or the US?

  10. Bell’s work continued Alexander Graham Bell’s work is still being continued to this very day. Any new cellphone, iPhone, or change to the Bell telephone company, is directly effecting something Alexander worked on, over 100 years ago.
