Amgen-Bruce Wallace Biotechnology Laboratory Program • Educational outreach program that provides equipment, curriculum assistance and supplies to high schools and colleges • Program integrates a hands-on, inquiry-based molecular biology curriculum • Designed to introduce the excitement of scientific discovery to students

  3. Who is Bruce Wallace? • Molecular biologist who was one of Amgen's first staff members • Helped establish the biotechnology program in local schools and organized a lecture series for the community

  4. Who’s involved…. • Amgen Foundation • “seeks to advance science education, improve quality of care and access for patients, and support resources that create sound communities where Amgen staff members live and work” • URI • Program site for all of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts

  6. What is biotechnology? • Employs use of living organisms in technology and medicine • Modifying living organisms for our use • Mass production • Recombinant DNA • Recombine DNA fragments from various sources

  7. History of Biotechnology • Fermentation • First use of BT to convert a food source into another form • Penicillin • GMO • Synthetic “human” insulin

  8. What to expect….. • AMGEN – chimera of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genetic elements • Prokaryotic elements: • Plasmid • Eukaryotic elements: • rfp gene from sea anemone (encodes mFP) • Transform E. coli • Purify protein using chromatography column
